Low-maintenance houseplants

Loving plants does not mean you have time to fuss over them every day. For busy schedules, frequent travelers, or anyone just discovering plants, here are eight species that ask for almost nothing.

What “easy” really means

  • Survives 3 weeks without water.
  • Tolerates variable light.
  • Not sensitive to drafts or air conditioning.
  • Keeps growing even when forgotten.
  • Rarely attracts pests.

The eight indestructibles

1. Snake plant (Dracaena trifasciata)

The benchmark. Three weeks without water? No problem. Dim light? Accepted. AC? Indifferent. Tiger-striped, variegated, dwarf, tall: there is a snake plant for every taste.

2. ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)

Stores its reserves in underground rhizomes. Holds for a month without water in a cool room. Artificial light is enough.

3. Golden Pothos

The unkillable. Grows anywhere, accepts anything. Tells you it is thirsty by drooping slightly, perks up the moment you water. Almost impossible to kill.

4. Cast iron plant (Aspidistra elatior)

Nicknamed for surviving 19th-century waiting rooms. Slow growth, maximum resistance.

5. Aglaonema

Colored varieties (red, pink, silver) that do not fade in low light. Tolerates neglect, AC, dry air.

6. Indoor Yucca

Thick trunk, fan of thin leaves. Bright light ideally, but survives in indirect light. Watering every two to three weeks.

7. Echeveria and rosette succulents

Small succulents in fleshy rosettes. Bright light, watering every three weeks. Perfect on a windowsill.

8. Cactus

The pinnacle of forgetfulness. Direct light, water every 4 to 6 weeks. Some species bloom once a year if they overwinter cool.

Golden rules for doing nothing

Pick the right pot. With these species, go for terracotta with excellent drainage. Terracotta dries the substrate faster, eliminating the most common mistake: rot from overwatering.

Free-draining substrate. 50% potting mix, 30% perlite, 20% horticultural sand. Eliminates 80% of potential problems.

Pot not too big. Easy plants like to feel snug. A pot one inch wider than the root ball is enough.

Standard light. Most of these species thrive in the natural indirect light of a normal living room.

How to combine them

For a credible zero-effort decor:

  • Bright corner: Snake plant + Pothos + Yucca, in stepped heights.
  • Dim room: ZZ Plant + Cast iron + Aglaonema, more foliage variety.
  • Bathroom (variable light): Snake plant + trailing Pothos.
  • Office: ZZ Plant or Aglaonema, desk height.
